Composer Natalie Holt Reveals Her Approach To Scoring Obi-Wan Kenobi

The big draw for Disney+’s Obi-Wan Kenobi series is easily the highly-anticipated rematch between Ewan McGregor’s Jedi Master and Hayden Christensen’s Darth Vader. However, the show will also make history this summer by featuring the music of Natalie Holt, the first woman to score a live action Star Wars project. Holt previously tackled Marvel’s Loki series and HBO Max’s upcoming Batgirl film. And while speaking with Vanity Fair, she described what it was like to play around in a galaxy far, far away.

All Star Wars projects should have an epic score to match the grand scale of the movies. Fortunately, Holt comes from an “orchestral background” and is also a trained violinist. But she also indicated that we can expect a few surprises as well.

“I think it’s an emotional score, and it does have its roots in the Star Wars tradition a little more than The Mandalorian does,” said Holt. “We had a collection of 250 horns and flutes, and I used this hunting horn in the score. We’re also blending the orchestra with some more modern synths sounds as well. It’s definitely what we’re used to and a few new elements.”

Viewers can also look forward to hearing Holt performing on the score itself. Holt recorded violin and viola parts and even sang on a number of tracks, which incorporate a wide variety of musical influences.

“There are some Latin influences in one of the planets,” revealed Holt. “There’s some Thai, Hong Kong, some sounds that are more Eastern. Definitely you take flavors from around the world, and then try and turn them into something…otherworldly. You’re on Star Wars, you’re scoring a planet, it has to have scale.”

Holt also worked with legendary Star Wars composer John Williams, who wrote new theme music for the title character. While Holt couldn’t reveal much about Williams’ piece, she still dropped a few hints about what he came up with.

“It’s reflective, and it’s just entirely appropriate,” teased Holt. “And it distills what the show is about in just the perfect way that John Williams can. It’s wistful, but there’s an element of hope to it. It’s doing something new and I think people are going to be really blown away by it.”

Obi-Wan Kenobi will premiere on Disney+ on Friday, May 27 with two episodes.
