Charlize Theron is Producing an Aqualad-Inspired Series For HBO Max

Jackson Hyde is making his live-action debut on HBO Max. According to Variety, the streaming service will explore Aqualad’s origins in a new series that is executive produced by Charlize Theron. The show is called You Brought Me the Ocean and will draw influence from the 2019 graphic novel of the same name.

Written by Alex Sanchez and illustrated by Jul Maroh, You Brought me the Ocean took place outside mainstream DC continuity. It was also primarily geared toward a young-adult audience. The book traced Jackson’s upbringing in the desert town of Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. There, he yearns for a life near the ocean and dreams of going to a college on the coast. As he begins to discover his Atlantean heritage, he also wrestles with romantic feelings for his high school’s swim team captain, Kenny Liu.

The upcoming TV series will stick close to its comic book source material. Theron will executive produce the show through her Denver & Delilah Films banner alongside A.J. Dix, Beth Kono, and Andrew Haas. However, the studio has yet to hire a writer for the project, which Variety describes as a “one-hour dramedy.”

Jackson Hyde previously made his first appearance in the Young Justice animated series, where The Walking Dead‘s Khary Payton has been providing his voice ever since the show debuted in 2010. That same year, he also showed up in DC’s comic book universe in Brightest Day #4. Jackson is the second character to assume the mantle of Aqualad. The first Aqualad, Garth, has been around since 1960. He was played by Drew Van Acker in season 2 of Titans.
