Netflix’s Locke & Key Series Will End With Season 3

Keyhouse Manor is officially closing its doors later this year. According to Deadline, Netflix has confirmed that the upcoming third season of Locke & Key will be its last.

Based on Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez’s hit IDW comic book series of the same name, the series follows the Locke family as they move into their ancestral mansion after the death of the family’s patriarch. Eventually, they discover that the house is home to several magical keys, each of which possesses a different supernatural ability. But they also learn that an evil force wants to use the keys for its own nefarious reasons.

A TV show based on Locke & Key went through several iterations (including an abandoned Fox pilot) before landing at Netflix in 2018. Normally, this would be the time when fans start making jokes about Netflix’s habit of cancelling shows prematurely. But it turns out that a three-season run was always the plan. After the first season premiered in 2020 to mostly positive reviews, the streaming service approached co-showrunners Carlton Cuse and Meredith Averill about plans for a 10-episode second season and an eight-episode third season. This also lined up with Cuse and Averill’s vision for how to adapt Hill and Rodriguez’s story.

“Once we began working on the series, we felt three seasons was the ideal length to bring the story of the Locke family and their Key House adventures to a satisfying conclusion,” said Cuse and Averill in a new statement. “As storytellers, we are grateful that we had the opportunity to tell our version of Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez’s incredible story exactly the way we wanted. We’re keeping the magical keys, though, for our own personal use.”

Netflix still hasn’t announced a release date for Locke & Key season 3.
