Last September, Sony TV and PlayStation Productions set Anthony Mackie to star in a live-action Twisted Metal series based on the hit video game franchise. Now, Deadline is reporting that the project has found a home at Peacock. The streaming service is going forward with the show, and Mackie remains in the leading role.
The original Twisted Metal game debuted in 1995 for the first PlayStation. Within the world of the game, “Twisted Metal” is the name of an over-the-top car combat tournament that offers no holds barred destruction. Vehicles can be equipped with guns, missiles, mines, and even nuclear weapons in the quest for demolition domination. The tournament is organized by Calypso, a man who promises each contestant a single wish if they manage to win.
Mackie’s character, John Doe, first appeared in Twisted Metal: Black as a man with no memory of his past. John joined Twisted Metal‘s lethal car combat in exchange for Calypso’s promise to tell him who he really is.

Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick came up with the current take on the Twisted Metal series. However, Cobra Kai‘s Michael Jonathan Smith will be the show’s primary writer and showrunner.
“Twisted Metal is one of PlayStation’s most beloved franchises,” said PlayStation Productions had Asad Qizilbash in a statement. “We are thrilled to have such an amazing creative team and partners working together who have such passion for this iconic property. We can’t wait for fans to see what we have planned for them.”
