Disney+ Officially Orders a New Percy Jackson Series

Percy Jackson is finally on his way to Disney+. Nearly two years have passed since author Rick Riordan announced that he was working with the streaming service on a new small-screen adaptation of his popular fantasy novels. But earlier today, Riordan shared a new video on Twitter announcing that Percy Jackson and the Olympians has officially been ordered to series. Check out what he had to say below.

Additionally, Riordan confirmed that James Bobin has come aboard the series as the director of its pilot episode. Bobin previously co-created Flight of the Concords and also helmed 2011’s The Muppets and its 2014 sequel, Muppets Most Wanted. He also recently helmed the pilot for Disney+’s The Mysterious Benedict Society, which premiered last summer. Bobin will direct Percy Jackson’s first episode from a script that Riordan himself co-wrote with Jon Steinberg. Riordan also shared an early look at the series’ new logo at the end of the video.

The Percy Jackson series launched in 2005 with the release of Riordan’s first novel, The Lightning Thief. The books center on the title character, a 12-year-old demigod who discovers that he is the son of Poseidon and embarks on a series of adventures that bring him face-to-face with several other characters and creatures from Greek Mythology. Riordan’s fifth and final book in the series, The Last Olympian, was released in 2009.

Riordan’s enthusiasm bodes well for the show, especially considering how vocal he’s been when expressing his disdain for 20th Century Fox’s two Percy Jackson films, which starred Logan Lerman in the title role. The studio’s Lightning Thief adaptation hit theaters in 2010 and received mixed reviews. However, it made enough money at the box office to get one sequel, Sea of Monsters, which arrived in 2013. Riordan claimed to be so disappointed in the films’ scripts that he never bothered to watch either of the finished products.
