Stargate co-writer Dean Devlin is heading 100 years in the future for his next TV project. Variety is reporting SYFY has picked up his new series, The Ark, for a full season consisting of 12 episodes.
The new series follows humanity’s efforts to colonize other planets in order to ensure the survival of their race. During the first mission, their spacecraft (named the Ark One) suffers a “catastrophic event” that kills several passengers. The survivors are then forced to “become the best versions of themselves” as the ship continues its year-long journey to reach its destination. But along the way, they face an absence of leadership and dwindling supplies. Essentially, it’s Lord of the Flies in space.
Devlin is writing The Ark and will split showrunning duties with his fellow executive producer, Jonathan Glassner, who previously developed Stargate SG-1 with Brad Wright. Glassner and Devlin were also executive producers on The Outpost, which aired its final season on The CW last fall.

“I’m so excited to have the opportunity to partner with SYFY again and can’t think of a better collaborator than Jonathan Glassner to bring this series to life,” said Devlin in a new statement.
Devlin is probably best known for his work with Roland Emmerich. In addition to the original Stargate film, their screenwriting collaborations include Independence Day, its 2016 sequel, and 1997’s Godzilla. He and Emmerich also co-created the Fox series The Visitor, which aired one 13-episode season in the late ‘90s. Devlin has primarily made his name as a writer and producer. However, he made his feature directorial debut with Geostorm in 2017.
“The Ark is a perfect fit for SYFY audiences and we know fans will gravitate to this heart-racing story from Dean Devlin, one of the most accomplished and respected sci-fi writers working today,” added Lisa Katz, president of scripted content for NBCU Entertainment and Streaming. “With the recent success of both Resident Alien and Chucky, the network is home to several of the most creative storytellers working in all of television.”
