Jonathan Nolan Will Direct Amazon Prime’s Fallout Series Premiere

Almost two years ago, word broke that Westworld creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy were adapting the Fallout video game franchise for TV as part of their new development deal with Amazon Prime. There have been virtually no updates on the series since then. However, the project seems to have taken a few crucial steps forward. According to Deadline, the show is aiming to start production later in 2022, with Nolan directing the first episode himself.

Amazon Prime has also drafted a new showrunning team to bring the hit games to life. Guiding the ship are Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner. Previously, Robertson-Dworet co-wrote the script for Captain Marvel alongside directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. She also has some experience with video game adaptations thanks to her work on the 2018 Tomb Raider reboot. Meanwhile, Wager has written for comedy shows like Silicon Valley, Portlandia, and Baskets. In 2019, he penned an episode of Star Trek: Short Treks that aired during the show’s second season.

Although Nolan usually concentrates on writing and producing, Fallout won’t be his first directing gig. He first stepped behind the camera on an episode of Person of Interest in 2013. Nolan has also helmed a few Westworld episodes.

Fallout launched in 1997 and it has gone on to become one of the gaming industry’s top-selling franchises. The games take place in the aftermath of a nuclear apocalypse and they are known for their retro-futuristic aesthetic. In addition to the four games in the main series, the franchise has also spawned a handful of spinoffs, including Fallout 76.

Nolan and Joy are executive producing Fallout through their Kilter Films banner alongside Athena Wickham. Todd Howard and James Altman will also executive produce the show for Bethesda Game Studios and Bethesda Softworks, respectively. Amazon Prime hasn’t announced a release date for the series. But if it starts filming this year, it could premiere as early as 2023.
