More Naomi Ties to Superman and Hawkman Revealed

The CW‘s Naomi is more of a blank slate to most readers than many of their other superhero shows, as the comic character is relatively new compared to Green Arrow, Flash, or even Batwoman. The upside for the showrunners should be plenty of free rein, and the capacity to surprise. But EW this morning revealed several details that ought to whet the appetites of even casual DC fans. Specifically, the ties to Superman and Hawkman.

Prior to discovering her inevitable super powers and secret origin story, The CW’s Naomi runs a popular Superman fan site. And when Superman himself comes through town as part of an as-yet-unexplained incident, her life changes forever. In the comics, it’s a battle with Mongul, and she later seeks Superman’s mentorship.

So far, everyone has remained cagey on whether Tyler Hoechlin, the current Arrowverse Superman, will show up. What showrunner Jill Blankenship will say is “She starts to realize that this affection and affinity she has for Superman is actually rooted in something much deeper than she thought. We get to watch as she discovers in real time [that] Superman [is] really part of her story and she’s part of his.”

And Hawkman’s home planet of Thanagar figures in, too. Naomi will find a mentor in local tattoo artist Dee, who reveals himself as a winged alien from the same world. (EW has a fully feathered new image.) Naomi’s comic story includes flashbacks to the Rann-Thanagar War. That 2005 event, involving Hawkman and Adam Strange among others, began when Thanagar found itself transported to the Vega system. As far as that goes, “We are going deep. I’m confident DC fans will pleasantly surprised with our cosmic cameos,” says Blankenship. “Over the season, Naomi’s world expands in such a huge way.”

Naomi premieres premieres Tuesday, Jan. 11 at 9 p.m. on The CW. Will you watch it? Let us know in comments.
