Tom Cavanagh Talks Eobard Thawne Role-Reversal on The Flash

The current “Armageddon” crossover on The CW‘s The Flash doesn’t just bring back old friends. Eobard Thawne, played by Tom Cavanagh, returned last week. In a future that fans no doubt hope becomes strictly alternate, he’s in a relationship with Barry’s wife Iris. Worse, in tonight’s episode, it turns out he’s the Flash now, while Barry Allen is the bad guy, Reverse Flash. Which means at long last, the actors get to trade clothes.

Speaking with EW, Cavanagh noted, “sometimes the cool-factor moments can be a little elusive, and this was definitely a thrill…For me personally, it was a real privilege to put on the Flash suit and play the Flash.”

He’s cagier when it comes to whether or not Thawne is on the level as a good guy. “If you layer it on as just one thing, you might be missing some opportunity there,” he says. “What’s nice is you know that Eobard Thawne, as written [on the show] and in the 80-plus years [of comics] canon, is somebody who doesn’t really leave things to chance. As an actor who likes to explore as many different colors and layers I can put in there, I think the idea that those two people come together on screen finally for the first time in forever, that’s a very large moment in the show, and one that was a delight to play.”

We’ll undoubtedly learn more tonight at 8pm on The CW.
