A long time ago, the Continent was utterly different from what fans saw in The Witcher. The Witcher: Blood Origin prequel series at Netflix will explore those ancient and now forgotten times. Details about the upcoming series are still vague and under wraps, but it recently became public knowledge that the show will deal with the Conjunction of the Spheres event. Neither the books nor the games offer many details about what happened during the cataclysm that opened the world of the Continent to creatures coming from other dimensions.
“When you look at our own history, societies that had been at their height, like the Roman Empire or the Mayan Empire, that’d be right before the fall and then we’re in dark ages again,” said Declan de Barra, writer and executive producer on Blood Origin, while talking with EW. “That fascinated me to wonder what that world could have been: what society would have been like and what elves wanted. That’s what we’re going to explore here.”

The Conjunction of the Spheres is also when the first humans set foot on the Continent. As always happens, the encounter between the newcomers and the local inhabits soon transformed into a civilization clash.
“We have obviously heard in the Witcher show that humans brought civilization to the elves,” said Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, The Witcher showrunner and Blood Origin executive producer. “They’re the ones who showed them what it was like to be civilized. And in fact, what we’re seeing in Blood Origin is that’s exactly opposite of the truth. The world was much more of a Golden Age than what we see in The Witcher years later.”
Netflix has yet to announce an official release date for the six-episode miniseries. At the moment, cameras are rolling in Iceland. A late-2022 release seems likely.
