Michael B. Jordan is Developing a Val-Zod Superman Miniseries
Earlier this year, word broke that Ta-Nehisi Coates and J.J. Abrams are working on a Black Superman movie. That particular film will feature an actor of African descent in the role of Kal-El. However, Val-Zod, one the DC universe’s pre-existing Black Supermen, may get the spotlight first.
Collider broke the story that Michael B. Jordan is developing a Val-Zod Superman miniseries for HBO Max. Regardless, Jordan has not committed to playing the role. But if he does play Val-Zod, it would make Jordan one of the few actors to play three major comic book characters in live-action. He previously played Human Torch in Fantastic 4 and Killmonger in Black Panther.

In DC’s multiverse, Val-Zod is the Superman of Earth-2. Within his universe, Val-Zod and Kal-El were both among the survivors of Krypton. But when Kal-El seemingly perished, Val-Zod eventually took up his mantle as the new Superman.
The other major Black Superman in DC continuity is Calvin Ellis, the Superman of Earth-23. He looks a lot like the 44th President of the United States, and happens to be the President in his world as well.
HBO Max hasn’t confirmed this report, but The Wrap and other Hollywood trades have indicated that the project is real.
