John de Lancie Teases a Different Q in Picard Season 2

It’s been a while since fans last saw Q, but the fan-favorite character is about to make his return. As teased by the recently-released trailer, the sophomore season of Picard will feature the return of the nearly omnipotent being in the Star Trek Universe. Once again, he will be portrayed by actor John de Lancie, who had a recent Q&A on his Cameo and teased some exciting news about Q in Picard.

“It’s been like 25 years, but I kind of found myself getting into the saddle really easily,” he said (via TrekMovie). “It wasn’t difficult at all. But I must say it’s not the sort of Puck-ish, Mercutio of old. It’s a different Q this time. It’s what they wanted and I think that it makes sense. But Patrick and I have had nice opening scenes, and scenes with Brent and working with Jonathan Frakes. It’s been really interested and I am delighted. Who would have thought?”

His words imply that fans won’t likely see the trickster version of the character, but rather the more serious one from his debut. De Lancie also praised the work Jonathan Frakes, Brent Spiner, Stewart and he are doing on set, saying that they can still do it despite being the “oldsters.”

While it’s been nearly three decades since de Lancie’s Q confronted Patrick Stewart’s Jean-Luc Picard in the final episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation, the character made several other appearances in the Star Trek Universe over the years. Most recently, the actor voiced Q in a cameo on Star Trek: Lower Decks. But after Picard’s live-action return with new adventures, it was just a matter of time before the captain of the USS Enterprise would meet his old frenemy again.

Star Trek: Picard season 2 will debut on Paramount+ somewhere in 2022.
