Two New Game of Thrones Animated Series Are In Development At HBO Max

Earlier this year, word broke that HBO Max was developing a new animated series to join its burgeoning Game of Thrones universe. Now, it looks like the franchise’s animated slate is expanding again. According to The Hollywood Reporter, two additional animated shows are currently in the works for the streaming service.

The first show will take place in the Golden Empire of Yi Ti, a location inspired by Imperial China. It also happens to be “one of the oldest and most advanced societies” in George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire novels. It’s located in the eastern part of Essos. Assuming the new show goes forward, it will be the first that Yi Ti has been seen onscreen.

HBO Max hasn’t announced any details about the creative teams for either series. And details about the second animated project are virtually nonexistent.

HBO is currently developing a slew of Game of Thrones spinoffs. The first spinoff, House of the Dragon, is now in production, and it will debut in 2022. Incidentally, one of that show’s principal characters, Lord Corlys Velaryon, is famous for sailing to Yi Ti.

Additionally, HBO Max is expanding the GoT brand’s reach with 10,000 Ships and an adaptation of Martin’s Tales of Dunk & Egg novellas. However, another previously announced live-action spinoff has just been given the axe. Although HBO was reportedly considering a series focusing on the King’s Landing slum of Flea Bottom, that one is no longer in the cards.
