Nico Parker Cast as Joel’s Daughter on HBO’s The Last of Us

It looks like The Last of Us’ heartbreaking prologue is coming to life on the small screen. According to Deadline, Nico Parker has joined HBO’s adaptation of Naughty Dog’s hit video game as Joel’s daughter, Sarah.

Sarah played a major role in The Last of Us’ opening stage, which took place 20 years before the main story and showed how the cordyceps virus plunged the world into chaos. She also happened to be the very first character that players could control in the game. Earlier this year, the TV show’s producers chose Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey to headline the series as Joel and Ellie, respectively. Gabriel Luna recently joined the series as Joel’s brother, Tommy. We can also expect Merle Dandridge to reprise her role from both games as Marlene.

Disney fans might recognize Parker from the studio’s live-action Dumbo remake, where she played the daughter of Colin Farrell’s character. She also showed up in several episodes in the HBO miniseries The Third Day, which aired last year. Parker’s mother is Westworld actress Thandiwe Newton. The two will soon appear on screen together in Reminiscence, which hits theaters and HBO Max in August.

Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin and Naughty Dog president Neil Druckmann are co-writing The Last of Us for HBO. The network previously recruited Kantemir Balagov to helm the series’ pilot, with Jasmila Žbanić and Ali Abbasi directing additional episodes. Filming will reportedly begin this summer.

HBO still hasn’t announced a premiere date for The Last of Us.
