A Madame Xanadu TV Series is in the Works at HBO Max

HBO Max is readying its next big DC adaptation. According to Variety, the streaming service has its eye on a new TV series headlined by Madame Xanadu. The series is being developed with J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions and Warner Bros. Television.

Madame Xanadu was introduced in the pages of DC’s short-lived Doorway to Nightmare anthology series in 1978. Originally a woman named Nimue Inwudu, she has long been one of the most powerful sorcerers in DC history. To write the TV series, HBO Max has enlisted filmmaker Angela Robinson, who will also executive produce alongside Abrams and Ben Stephenson. Rachel Rusch Rich will co-executive produce.

Robinson already has her own loose ties to the DC Universe. In 2017, she wrote the script for Professor Marston and the Wonder Women, which told the story of how William Moulton Marston came up with the idea for Wonder Woman in the early ‘40s. Robinson has also worked as a writer on True Blood and How to Get Away With Murder.

Madame Xanadu previously made her live-action debut in DC Universe’s short-lived Swamp Thing series, with Jeryl Prescott playing the role. The character is also a member of DC’s Justice League Dark roster. As most fans know by now, HBO Max is also developing a separate series featuring those characters.

Regardless, it’s not clear if the streamer is playing the long game and introducing the team’s members one at a time before having them join forces. Another series centered on a different Justice League Dark mainstay, Constantine, is also in development.
