Dove Cameron Explains the Reason Behind the Powerpuff Pilot Reshoots

Last month, The CW announced that it was passing on the live-action Powerpuff series. But rather than abandoning it altogether, the network saw enough potential to order a new pilot episode that will hopefully fix any mistakes made by its predecessor. The CW CEO Mark Pedowtiz previously claimed that the original pilot was “too campy” for executives to get onboard with. Now, series star Dove Cameron is sharing her own thoughts on the situation.

Cameron, who will play Bubbles on the series, discussed the new pilot during a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight. A continuation of the long-running Powerpuff Girls mythos has lofty expectations to live up to. According to Cameron, they don’t want to let fans down.

“It’s a really big piece of IP, and it’s tonally very specific,” said Cameron. “Like getting it right, making everybody happy, and also making sure that it translates. It’s so specific. To modernize it and to make it fit like a bunch of different things that don’t normally go together, it’s just kind of like a puzzle piece. So we’re removing some elements and we’re replacing others. I think the script is going to get another whack, and it’s just going to be a slightly different approach but everything else is going to stay the same.”

In the meantime, Cameron put a positive spin on things, and welcomed the rare opportunity of getting a do-over at an earlier performance.

“I’m actually very excited at the thought of it,” added Cameron. “I was texting the girls and we’re like, ‘Oh. Well, now we know what we’re doing.’ What an amazing thing. You never get to do that as an actor — go back and be like, ‘What would I have done differently?'”

The new Powerpuff pilot script will also be written by Diablo Cody and Heather Regnier, who wrote the original episode as well. It’s not clear when The CW plans to start filming again.
