Patton Oswalt Draws Comparison Between M.O.D.O.K. and The Boys

In a matter of days, Hulu will release the first season of M.O.D.O.K., an irreverent take on Marvel’s super-intelligent villain. The show has been developed by veteran actor and comedian Patton Oswalt together with Jordan Blum. Oswalt will also lend his voice to the titular antihero. While promoting the forthcoming show, the actor and writer drew some comparisons between M.O.D.O.K. and Homelander, The Boys‘ superpowered and often misunderstood protagonist.

“When you really, really love something, you will not be able to not see the flaws in it and want to explore those,” he said while talking with Empire. “So with The Boys, you think, ‘if a guy like Homelander did have these powers, wouldn’t you also be an asshole?’ And especially with M.O.D.O.K., if he has this superior, eight-dimensional intellect, but he is a D-level, bottom-tier supervillain, what does that do to him emotionally? That’s a real thing to explore.”

Oswalt gave voice to The Deep’s gills during the sophomore season of The Boys. The scene featured a dreamlike sequence where the former member of the Seven talked to his respiratory orifices.

Oswalt then explained that he wanted to use as many Marvel references as possible in his show. However, his partner Blum stopped him from giving out too much too soon.

“I was the kid who had gone trick-or-treating the night before, stayed up until 4am the night before and brought back five pillowcases full of candy. And Jordan was, ‘pick 20 and we’ll put the rest in the freezer for you, we’re not gonna eat them all.’ That’s what it was!”

Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K. will debut its first season on Hulu on May 21.
