The CW Gives Stargirl an Early Season 3 Renewal

Stargirl season 2 is still a few months away, but The CW is already investing in Courtney Whitmore’s future. According to Deadline, Brec Bassinger will return as the star-spangled superheroine for at least one more season.

Created by Geoff Johns and based on the character he co-created with artist Lee Moder, Stargirl originally premiered on DC Universe last year. However, the first season also aired simultaneously on The CW, and became the network’s most-watched summer debut in six years. But when DC Universe decided to move away from original programming and rebrand itself as a digital comics hub, the series became a CW exclusive.

Stargirl wasn’t the only CW series that got an early renewal today. The network also ordered another season of Kung Fu, the reboot of the classic 1970s series that premiered last month.

Meanwhile, anticipation continues to build for Stargirl’s sophomore season. The CW recently revealed the first look at the series’ newest villain, Eclipso, as played by Nick Tarabay. Additionally, Jonathan Cake will menace Stargirl this year as another big bad, The Shade.

Other new additions to the show’s cast include Alkoya Brunson and Jim Gaffigan as Jakeem Thunder and the voice of Thunderbolt, respectively. The show will also have its first proper Arrowverse crossover with an appearance by John Wesley Shipp as Jay Garrick/The Flash.

Stargirl season 2 will premiere on Tuesday, August 10 on The CW.
