The Boys’ Laz Alonso Says Season 3 is Bloodier Than Before

After ramming a speedboat into a whale and blowing up at least a dozen heads during a congressional hearing, it’s not clear how the cast and crew of The Boys can possibly dial up the violence in season 3. But according to series star Laz Alonso, that’s exactly what they’re planning to do. In a new interview, Alonso teased the level of carnage that viewers can expect when the series returns to Amazon Prime in the near future.

Collider recently caught up with Alonso to discuss his new movie, The Wrath of Man. But when The Boys inevitably came up, he revealed exactly how he knows that the new season will be “darker and darker” than its predecessors.

“I’ll put it to you this way,” said Alonso. “I was talking to the head makeup artist and she’s in charge of ordering the blood — that’s one of her many jobs. She told me that all of season 2… When you talk about bulk, I don’t think they used over a gallon of blood in season 2, believe it or not. season 3, we’re already at three and a half gallons of blood. So that should give you a little indication of where it’s going.”

Alonso also teased the arrival of Jensen Ackles’ Soldier Boy, a new addition to the cast of season 3. In the comics, Soldier Boy was the leader of Payback, a rival superhero team. But it sounds like the TV show is re-imagining him as the world’s first supe who fought in World War II a la Captain America. And his inclusion “allowed [showrunner Eric Kripke] to not only bring in a character historically who’s pretty dark, but it also makes all of the other ensemble Supes darker as well.”

The Boys season 3 began filming earlier this year, and Alonso insists that the shoot has “gone relatively smoothly” despite the ongoing pandemic. Additionally, he shared that they are “between one-fourth of the way through and halfway through” production on the new episodes. Amazon still hasn’t announced a return date for the series. However, it’s expected to drop either later this year or early next year.
