Gabriel Luna Cast as Tommy in HBO’s The Last of Us

HBO’s upcoming adaptation of The Last of Us will feature another familiar character from the video games that inspired it. Deadline brings word that Gabriel Luna has joined the series’ cast as Joel’s brother, Tommy.

Tommy was introduced in the original Last of Us, with Jeffrey Pierce providing his voice and motion capture. Players met him during the game’s prologue, when he helped Joel and his daughter, Sarah, escape Austin during the outbreak of the cordyceps virus. Tommy, who was also a member of the militia group known as the Fireflies, became estranged from Joel sometime after the pandemic first struck. But years later, Joel found him living at a settlement in Wyoming powered by a hydroelectric dam. Pierce returned to play the character in The Last of Us Part II, which finally hit stores last year. According to his character description, the TV show’s version of Tommy will also be “a former soldier who hasn’t lost his sense of idealism and hope for a better world.”

Marvel fans know Luna from playing Robbie Reyes/Ghost Rider during Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s fourth season. In 2019, Hulu announced that it was developing a Ghost Rider spinoff series with Luna reprising his role. However, the project ultimately stalled. Later that year, Luna also co-starred in Terminator: Dark Fate as the REV-9.

Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey are headlining The Last of Us as Joel and Ellie, respectively. Craig Mazin is co-writing the series with Naughty Dog co-president Neil Druckmann. Filming will reportedly start this July with Beanpole director Kantemir Balagov helming the pilot.

HBO hasn’t announced a release date for the show. But since production on the first season is rumored to last until next June, it’s possible that the first episode won’t air until late 2022 at the earliest.
