Last week, The Mandalorian season 2 finally began airing on Disney+. However, the series’ producers are already looking ahead to the future. Deadline is reporting that Lucasfilm has set a release window for production on the show’s third season. Optimistically, filming could start as early as next week, although this might get pushed back to late November/early December. Other sources suggest that filming might not begin until early 2021.
This new report lines up with comments that creator and showrunner Jon Favreau made last month. Favreau told Variety that The Mandalorian was “on schedule” to resume production before the end of the year. Variety previously reported that Favreau had been working on the scripts for season 3 well before Lucasfilm ordered a formal renewal.
Additionally, Deadline makes note of a recent listing found in Production Weekly that pertains to The Mandalorian season 3. According to the listing, the new season will film under the working title “Buccaneer,” which is sure to fuel speculation about where Favreau and his writing staff plan on taking the story. Additionally, Deadline said that Sophie Thatcher may have an unspecified role in season 3.

It shouldn’t surprise anyone that Lucasfilm is also still assessing The Mandalorian’s spinoff potential. Deadline’s sources suggest that Thatcher could actually be part of the first offshoot series. Regardless, there are a lot of other options to choose from.
