Anyone who has ever read Terry Pratchett’s work knows that the late author infused his wildly imaginative fantasy tales with a unique sense of humor. Fans will be happy to hear that that same comic style is on full display in the first trailer for The Watch. The upcoming BBC series draws from Pratchett’s Discworld novels. You can check out the first look at the series below.

The Discworld series spanned 41 books. However, The Watch zeroes in on the Ankh-Morpork City Watch, a branch of law-enforcement that deals in the supernatural. BBC premiered the show’s trailer during a virtual New York Comic Con panel moderated by Yvette Nicole Brown. The panel included executive producers Simon Allen and Richard Stokes as well as cast members Richard Dormer, Lara Rossi, Adam Hugill, Jo Eaton-Kent, and Marama Corlett.

Dormer headlines the show as the City Watch’s bumbling captain, Sam Vimes. Throughout the course of the series, he’ll lead his team against a cavalcade of wizards, trolls, werewolves, and other fantastical creatures. They’ll also be forced to foil a plot to resurrect a “great dragon” that could bring about the end of their world as they know it. Essentially, it sounds like viewers can expect a police procedural with a paranormal twist.
The Watch will debut on BBC America on Sunday, January 3, 2021.
