Harley Quinn Producers Have Considered Making an Animated Movie

The last season of Harley Quinn ended with Harley and Poison Ivy driving off into the sunset after confessing their true feelings for each other. With season 3 officially in the works, fans are excited to see how their relationship develops across more episodes. However, the show’s future wasn’t always a sure thing. Three months passed between the second season finale and HBO Max’s renewal, leading viewers to wonder if the series would be coming back at all. That’s why showrunners Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker considered making a feature-length film to wrap up Harley’s story.

Halpern and Schumacker discussed their thinking behind this in a new interview with Deadline. Now that season 3 has been greenlit, making a movie doesn’t rank high on their list of priorities right now. But this doesn’t mean they won’t revisit the idea again in the future.

Yeah, we would love that,” said Schumacker. “When we were waiting for a season 3 pickup, we were kicking around ideas with the executives over at Warner Bros. Animation about that sort of thing, because we were like, ‘Well, we have stories to tell with these characters. We want to continue going with it, and if season 3 can’t happen, maybe we can do something in the feature space, which is sort of independent of a network picking up the show or not.’ So, that is something that has been on our [minds]. Right now, we’re not planning on it. But it is absolutely something that we would be interested very much in doing down the road.”

The producers also teased what storylines will play out in the upcoming season. According to Halpern and Schumacker, they plan to zero in on Ivy’s character and tell stories from her perspective. And of course, we’ll also see more of Jim Gordan as a bumbling police commissioner. But as expected, the new episodes will mostly revolve around Harley and Ivy’s blossoming romance.

“So, I think in the third season, the general idea we’ve been talking about…And the room hasn’t even started yet,” said Halpern. “These are just conversations between Dean Lorey, and myself and Patrick. [But] the idea [is], when you’ve mostly been in toxic and bad relationships your whole life, how do you then be in a good one? How does the baggage that you bring from all these other relationships affect the relationship you’re in that you really want to work?”
