The CW’s Supergirl Will End After Season 6

Eight months after Stephen Amell said goodbye to Oliver Queen, yet another Arrowverse mainstay is getting ready to retire from the life of a TV superhero. Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Supergirl’s upcoming sixth season will be its last.

The series’ leading lady, Melissa Benoist, confirmed the news on her official Instagram account. She also issued a statement, which you can read below.

Supergirl originally premiered on CBS in 2015. Near the end of its first season, the series established some connectivity with The CW’s Arrowverse in an episode that guest-starred Grant Gustin as Barry Allen/The Flash. From season 2 onwards, Supergirl aired on The CW, with its characters occupying a parallel reality separate from the mainline Arrowverse. Starting with Invasion! in 2016, Benoist’s character began participating in The CW’s annual crossovers. However, last year’s Crisis on Infinite Earths event formally merged their universes into one.

Fortunately, this won’t be the last we see of Kryptonian superheroes on The CW. The network is still planning debut its Superman and Lois spinoff in 2021, with Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch reprising the roles they originated on Supergirl. That series will show the title characters navigating their new lives as parents. It’s possible that Benoist could make a few guest appearances to check in on her new cousins as well.

According to EW, Supergirl’s writers have already started plotting the final season, which will run for 20 episodes. The season will also air sometime in 2021.
