In 2005, Doctor Who returned to television with Christopher Eccleston as the Ninth Doctor. However, Eccleston’s stint as the most famous Time Lord lasted only a single season, and he refused to revisit the franchise…until now.
Big Finish has announced that the studio has lined up Eccleston to star in a new Ninth Doctor Doctor Who audio series. Several previous Doctors have already recorded Doctor Who full cast audio adventures for Big Finish over the last two decades. But signing Eccleston is a coup that Big Finish couldn’t resist celebrating with a video.

In a brief statement, Eccleston said “after 15 years it will be exciting to revisit the Ninth Doctor’s world, bringing back to life a character I love playing.”

According to Big Finish’s Jason Haigh-Ellery, a unique confluence of events helped bring Eccleston back to Doctor Who.
“I first talked to Christopher about returning to the role of the Doctor at the Gallifrey One convention in February this year,” said Haigh-Ellery. “Christopher said he was enjoying meeting the fans and was pleased that his Doctor was remembered so fondly. He indicated he would be open to discussing a project with Big Finish…And then the pandemic happened and time moved both quickly and very slowly…I am so pleased that Christopher has decided to return to the role with us – and I’m excited to welcome him to the Big Finish family as we discover the new adventures of the Ninth Doctor.”
Doctor Who: The Ninth Doctor Adventures will be released in 2021 as four volumes, with three new full cast audio stories in each volume. Big Finish is offering the volumes as CDs and as digital releases.
