The 2020 Peabody Award winners have been announced, and two fan favorite shows are among this year’s standouts for “the most compelling and empowering stories released in broadcasting and digital media.” Watchmen and Stranger Things were each given an award in the entertainment category.
Watchmen debuted on HBO in late 2019, as Damon Lindelof and his team updated and remixed the original comic by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. The TV series was a sequel to the comic, but with updated themes that included a strong focus on racism and social justice. It was also critically acclaimed and widely praised after its debut. HBO has not signaled any plans for a second season, and Lindelof has declined to return.
Stranger Things was honored for its third season; which premiered on Netflix in summer 2019. Series creators Matt and Ross Duffer also shared their response to the news with Variety.

“This is an incredible honor and the company we find ourselves in is inspiring, to say the least,” said the Duffer brothers.
HBO’s Chernobyl miniseries and Succession were also among this year’s entertainment winners. Additionally, Dickinson, Fleabag, David Makes Man, Unbelievable, Ramy, and When They See Us rounded out the same category. However, Good Omens was among the nominated shows that didn’t make the final cut.
