HBO Max’s Green Lantern Series Will Feature Sinestro

Back in October, HBO Max revealed that a Green Lantern-inspired series is coming to the new streaming service. Arrow’s Greg Berlanti will produce the series and put the focus on a variety of characters from the Green Lantern mythos. Now, new details about the show have emerged during the Television Critics Association press tour, via a report from Collider

At TCA, HBO’s Sarah Aubrey said that Green Lantern will “span several decades,” and primarily focus on “two stories about Green Lanterns on Earth.” But the biggest news is that the show will go “into the Sinestro story.”

Aubrey didn’t identify which Green Lanterns would be used in the series. While Hal Jordan and John Stewart are likely frontrunners, they aren’t the only Green Lanterns from Earth. As for Sinestro, he was once the greatest of the Green Lanterns. But his arrogance and his brutality against his own people led to a fall from grace. Sinestro eventually founded the Sinestro Corps, a Yellow Lantern group powered by fear instead of will power.

Back when the Green Lantern series and its companion show, Strange Adventures, were first announced, Berlanti explained what he had in mind for them.

“Both of these original DC properties we’ll be creating for HBO Max will be unlike anything seen on television,” said Berlanti. “An anthology series of cautionary tales set in a world where superpowers exist, and, in what promises to be our biggest DC show ever made, we will be going to space with a Green Lantern television series, but I can’t reveal any more about that just yet.”

Green Lantern would mark a live-action return to the franchise for the first time since the film from 2011. Ryan Reynolds played Hal Jordan, while Mark Strong portrayed Sinestro. It ended up being a box office bomb, and was subsequently excluded from the DCEU films.

The new Green Lantern show doesn’t currently have a premiere date and it is still in pre-production.
