Marvel TV Has Been Folded Into Marvel Studios

Earlier this year, Disney rewarded Kevin Feige for his Marvel Studios success by promoting him to Marvel’s Chief Creative Officer. That means Feige now oversees all aspects of Marvel’s publications and TV productions. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel is restructuring to accommodate those changes. And Marvel TV has now been folded into Marvel Studios.

This won’t be without consequences, as THR notes that significant layoffs will result from the move. Marvel TV’s Jeph Loeb will remain on board for the transition. However, Loeb is still expected to leave Marvel TV in the near future. Until recently, Loeb oversaw Marvel’s live-action series including Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Cloak and Dagger, Runaways, and the various Marvel animated shows.

Marvel TV’s live action initiative was launched with the promise of bringing the MCU to television. While the first few seasons of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. did feature a few MCU characters in cameo roles, the films and the TV show heroes have been segregated. It’s widely believed that this was due to a rift between Feige and Marvel CEO Ike Perlmutter. In 2015, Disney took Marvel Studios away from Perlmutter in order to separate him from Feige.

As a result of these moves, the Marvel TV characters will no longer be walled off from the films. Conceivably, there may be more opportunities for crossover appearances. Characters like Luke Cage and Daredevil may be in play, once two years pass since their last appearance on Netflix. Feige is also overseeing live-action shows for Disney+, including The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, WandaVision, and Loki. Unlike the earlier Marvel series, those shows are actually a part of the next MCU phase.
