Kevin Feige Discusses Marvel’s Upcoming Disney Streaming Shows

Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige recently participated in a roundtable discussion organized by The Hollywood Reporter. When the subject of Marvel’s presence on Disney Play was broached, Feige teased what the studio has planned. Specifically, he likened the upcoming series to the episodic format of the comics they’re based on.

“We are going to tell stories for the streaming service that we wouldn’t be able to tell in a theatrical experience,” explained Feige. “A longer-form narrative, that’s what comics are, it’s about as longform a narrative as exists. But also maintaining that theatrical experience, which is our bread and butter, and the lines around the block, if you’re lucky.”

Feige also briefly mentioned the impending Disney-Fox merger, which would allow Marvel Studios to integrate the X-Men and Fantastic Four into the MCU. “Well, it’s not a hundred percent complete yet, so there’s only so much I’m allowed to say, or so much they even tell me,” he said. His comments are certainly more reserved than those made by Disney CEO Bob Iger. Back in September, Iger openly expressed his desire for Feige to oversee the X-Men series once the merge is complete.

Lately, Marvel has had a rather tenuous relationship with the streaming medium. Their initial batch of Netflix shows started out strong and were well received. However, the recent cancellations of Iron Fist and Luke Cage suggest a change is in the winds. Could that cause Marvel’s newest streaming series to suffer a similar fate? It also doesn’t help that the latest season of Daredevil is reported to have seen a 50% decrease in viewers from its previous season. Despite this, Marvel seems to be fully embracing the prospects offered by the imminent launch of Disney Play. New shows featuring Falcon, Winter Soldier, Loki, and Scarlet Witch are reportedly in development for the studio’s new streaming service.
