The newly released Stranger Things documentary, One Last Adventure, has explained the absence of Demogorgons from the show’s final battle. Providing a behind-the-scenes look at the creative decisions behind Season 5, the documentary explains how the series’ creators came to the decision.
Reason behind Demogorgons’ absence in Stranger Things final battle revealed in new doc
The Stranger Things documentary, One Last Adventure, has revealed new details about a choice that sparked widespread discussion among fans: the complete absence of Demogorgons during the series’ final battle. Despite being one of the show’s most dangerous threats, the creatures were intentionally left out of the confrontation in The Abyss.
According to the documentary, the decision was made during detailed story planning sessions for Season 5. The Duffer Brothers and their writing team weighed whether to include multiple Upside Down monsters alongside Vecna and the Mind Flayer. During the documentary, Matt Duffer is shown discussing the scale of the final confrontation in The Abyss with the writing team. He stated that “the thing that’s cool is the giant monster – that’s what’s new.”
Later, he added, “In the MAC-Z, it is insane… insane, and so climactic. And it is climactic because we have six Demos attacking simultaneously.” Writer Kate Trefry raised a key concern, saying, “I guess I maybe feel… wonder about Demo fatigue.” Ross Duffer agreed with this, responding, “That’s fair.” Ross added, “Like how exhausting, right? It’s a lot.” Following that exchange, the team decided to exclude Demogorgons from the final battle altogether.
The Duffer Brothers also highlighted the logic in the story as a reason. Speaking to ScreenRant, Matt Duffer explained that Vecna had no need to involve Demogorgons during the confrontation. “It felt more right to us… why does he need the Demos when the Mind Flayer is this giant thing and can attack them?” he said.
