DC & Marvel Are Like ‘Apples & Oranges,’ Says Sean Gunn

DC and Marvel have long been the leading forces in the comic-book world and have since extended their dominance to the big screen. Despite their differences, both franchises have leveraged the talents of the same artists on multiple occasions. Two such personalities are James and Sean Gunn, who have extensively worked with both Marvel and DC. In a recent discussion, Sean Gunn addressed the contrast between the two superhero juggernauts and highlighted his experience with them.

Sean Gunn on how brother James brings similarities in DC and Marvel’s processes

According to Sean Gunn, the comparison between Marvel and DC is similar to the apples and oranges debate. Nevertheless, he has witnessed some similarities during filming due to the involvement of his brother in both franchises.

While talking to The Wrap, Sean Gunn disclosed that there are variations on the creative front between Marvel and DC. “I came into the whole process of working at Marvel once the machine was kind of already up and running smoothly and doing well,” the 50-year-old actor said. “DC, I’ve done Suicide Squad, but now they’re kind of overhauling it, and it’s new ever since my brother [James Gunn] took over as head of the studio. It’s sort of been a new process for them. So it would be, it’s really kind of true, like trying to compare apples and oranges,” he added.

After his detailed comparison, he also touched upon the similarities that Marvel and DC share, particularly due to the works of James Gunn. “Underneath it all, working with my brother is more similar than it is different to other things,” Sean Gunn stated. “So the fact that I was working with James in Marvel and James in DC makes it actually — there’s a lot more similarities in terms of process,” he further stated.

Gunn famously portrayed Kraglin in his brother’s Guardians of The Galaxy trilogy. Shortly after James Gunn was announced as the co-CEO of DC Studios, Sean also jumped ships from Marvel. Having played Weasel in 2021’s The Suicide Squad, the actor will be reprising his role in the upcoming Creature Commandos series. He is also set to lend his voice to the character of G.I. Robot in the same show. In addition, Sean Gunn has been cast as the revamped DCU’s Maxwell Lord. However, details about Lord’s debut are currently unknown.
