James Gunn Says The Suicide Squad Has the Coolest Action Scene He’s Ever Shot

The Suicide Squad’s R-rating pretty much guarantees that we can expect more balls-to-the-wall action than the first film was able to provide. But for James Gunn, it all boils down to a single scene featuring Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn.

Gunn recently spoke with AP for a story where directors of this summer’s biggest releases share behind-the-scenes anecdotes. Apparently, working with Robbie was the highlight of Gunn’s experience on The Suicide Squad. Not only is one of her action sequences his favorite part of the movie, it’s also his favorite scene in his entire filmmaking career.

“She can do anything,” said Gunn. “Or I thought she could do anything. And then one day she had to sing and I said, ‘OK, well you can do everything but one thing.’ But she’s such a great actress. She embodies the character. She’s able to do the comedy. She’s able to do the drama. And physically, she is a pure athlete and is able to do these stunts in such a graceful, magnificent, beautiful way. And so I wrote the biggest action scene I’ve ever done all around [Robbie’s character] Harley, and it was so fun to create just on every level from working with the stunt guys all the way through to working with her. It’s probably my favorite four minutes of film I’ve ever shot before.”

In case anybody doubted him, Gunn offered some additional praise for Robbie on Twitter earlier this week. He also confirmed that actors were told whether their Suicide Squad characters would live or die before they started filming.

The Suicide Squad hits theaters and HBO Max on August 6.
