We’ve known since he made 300 and Watchmen that Zack Snyder loves to stylize his movies. The closer he can make his frames look like actual comic book artwork, the better, for him. But with Man of Steel, he partnered with Christopher Nolan, who is the opposite and likes everything real. Batman v Superman dragged things back a bit more into the four-color fantasy realm. And now, in the final Zack Snyder’s Justice League trailer, he’s gone full epic mode. Unconstrained by studio notes to make it lighter, it looks like he’s made his full-on DC superhero opera. Snyder fans and haters will probably see everything here that bolsters their opinions. One way or another.

We’ve seen teases all week, but this puts everything together. Darkseid! Frank Miller Batmobile! White Knight-style Joker! Themyscira falls! No Martian Manhunter yet! It looks like an all-out Apokolips versus Earth war, with more of Snyder’s blue and black tones than Joss Whedon’s reds. And a whole lot more Ray Fisher.
Zack Snyder’s Justice League debuts on HBO Max March 18, as a four-hour movie. While images of a possible 4K UHD Blu-ray have leaked online, there is no official confirmation on a date for that as yet.
