Nearly two decades ago, Dwayne Johnson got his big break on the silver screen as the Scorpion King in The Mummy Returns. He went on to headline his own Scorpion King solo movie, which spawned a few sequels without Johnson. However, Johnson is looking to revive the franchise with Universal Pictures.
According to Deadline, Johnson and his ex-wife/producing partner Dany Garcia are producing the new Scorpion King reboot film through their company, Seven Bucks Productions. Jonathan Herman will write the script. Johnson is not expected to reprise his role because of his busy schedule, which means a new actor will fill the title role. But Johnson may still appear in the movie in some capacity.
Deadline also states that sources indicate that the new movie will be set in the present, instead of the past.

“The Scorpion King was my very first role ever on the silver screen,” said Johnson in a statement. “And I’m honored and excited to reimagine and deliver this cool mythology to a whole new generation. I wouldn’t have had the career I’m lucky enough to have had it not been for The Scorpion King a. And I’m thrilled that we at Seven Bucks Productions can help create those same opportunities for other hard working actors today. I believe Jonathan Herman will put in the hard work to deliver a fantastic script for our global audience.”
“The original Scorpion King was a crucial catalyst helping to catapult us into the world of film,” added Garcia. “To be able to now produce the next iteration as part of our Seven Bucks Productions slate is [also] a special, full circle moment.”
Universal Pictures is also looking for a director to helm The Scorpion King. Regardless, the film doesn’t currently have any release window set.
