James Cameron Says Avatar 2 Is Complete, Avatar 3 Near Finish

It has definitely been a long ride, but it seems that the long-awaited Avatar 2 is ready. Many fans were almost losing hope of ever seeing the fabled sequel to 2009’s epic science-fiction blockbuster, given that Disney postponed its official release recently. In a chat that James Cameron had with Arnold Schwarzenegger, the Avatar director explained what everybody already suspected; the decision was taken due to the COVID-19 emergency.

“COVID hit us like it hit everybody… We lost about four and a half months of production,” he said (via The Independent). “As a result of that, we’ve rolled around one more full year for a release in December of 2022,” he added. “Now that doesn’t mean I have an extra year to finish the film because the day we deliver Avatar 2 we’ll just start working on finishing Avatar 3.”

Then, the director confirmed that Avatar 2 has wrapped up filming while Avatar 3 is something close to that.

“I’m down in New Zealand shooting,” he added. “We’re shooting the remainder of the live action. We’ve got about 10 per cent left to go. We’re 100 per cent complete on Avatar 2 and we’re sort of 95 per cent complete on Avatar 3.”

Filming for the first two Avatar sequels began in September 2017. While many details from the upcoming movie are still under wrap, fans already know that the story will feature many members from the original cast — including some of the characters who died at the end of Avatar — returning on Pandora 13 years after the events of the original film.

Should everything go according to plans, Avatar 2 will hit theaters on December 16, 2022. The following sequels should debut each every couple of years.
