Sony’s MCU-adjacent universe of Marvel characters is about to get a lot bigger. Collider is reporting that the studio is beginning to develop a standalone film for the clairvoyant Madame Web. To write the script, they’ve enlisted the team of Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, who also penned the screenplay for Morbius. Sony executive Palak Patel will oversee the project’s development.
Writer Denny O’Neil and artist John Romita Jr. introduced Madame Web in The Amazing Spider-Man #210 in 1980. Her real name is Cassandra Webb, and she was born blind. However, she compensated for her disability with psychic powers that manifested during her youth. Webb later learned that she was suffering from myasthenia gravis, a disease that attacked her central nervous system. To counteract its effects, her husband built her a life-support system shaped like a spider’s web. Eventually, she discovered Spider-Man’s secret identity and subsequently teamed up with the wallcrawler on several occasions to aid him in his heroic efforts.

Aside from her occasional partnerships with Spider-Man, Madame Web has played a substantial role in the lives of two Spider-Women. She acted as a mentor to the third Spider-Woman, Mattie Franklin. Additionally, her granddaughter, Charlotte Witter, assumed a villainous version of this mantle after Doctor Octopus experimented on her.
Madame Web has never been depicted in live-action. However, she has shown up in a few other forms of media over the years. The character was a regular fixture in the ‘90s Spider-Man cartoon, where she was memorably voiced by Stan Lee’s wife, Joan Lee. She also made an appearance in the 2010 video game Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions.
