HBO Will Trace the Targaryens’ History in a New Game of Thrones Prequel

Surprising no one, HBO is developing yet another series set in the Game of Thrones universe. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the show will take place 300 years before the flagship series and delve into the storied history of House Targaryen.

This new series will primarily draw influence from George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, which was published last year. That book was released as a companion to A Song of Ice and Fire and recounted several Targaryen family exploits, starting with Aegon I’s conquest of Westeros’ Seven Kingdoms. From there, other stories chronicled the reigns of his descendants, including Aenys, Maegor, and Jaehaerys. Martin has said that he plans on publishing a second volume of Fire & Blood at some point. But given his shaky history with release dates, it’s anyone’s guess as to when this (or any other GoT installment) will finally arrive.

THR’s sources indicate that HBO is close to inking a pilot deal for the series. Apparently, the show is a “new take” on an idea conceived by Bryan Cogman, who was originally attached to spearhead his own Game of Thrones prequel. Cogman has since departed that project and is now working on Amazon’s upcoming Lord of the Rings series. Martin will write the script for the revamped prequel alongside Ryan Condal, who previously co-created the USA series Colony. Condal also co-wrote the screenplays for Hercules and Rampage, both of which starred Dwayne Johnson.

Of course, HBO has plenty of other Game of Thrones spinoffs in the works. The first offering stars Naomi Watts and takes place during Westeros’ Age of Heroes. That series wrapped filming for its pilot episode back in July. Additionally, the network has plans for at least three other follow-ups.
