With Guardians of the Galaxy, James Gunn took a ragtag band of D-list comic book characters and made them household names. It remains to be seen if he can work his magic with The Suicide Squad. Regardless, we can be sure of one thing: Gunn’s DC debut is bound to have some catchy music. The “Awesome Mix” soundtracks from both Guardians films are a big reason why those movies have stood out. Now, Gunn is offering a few hints about The Suicide Squad’s music as well.
When Gunn was asked if The Suicide Squad will take a page out of the Guardians’ playbook and feature an assortment of familiar tunes. Gunn answered in the affirmative. However, Gunn insisted that the music will have a different flavor this time around.

Additionally, Gunn replied to a few queries about his music choices for Guardians of the Galaxy and its 2017 sequel. Gunn revealed that he wanted to use Three Dog Night’s “Never Been to Spain” in the first movie. Unfortunately, the licensing cost was beyond his price range. He also shared that Pilot’s “Magic” and Electric Light Orchestra’s “Livin’ Thing” were supposed to be heard in the original film as well, but both sequences were left on the cutting room floor. Surprisingly, Gunn admitted that he’d love to re-release Guardians of the Galaxy with these scenes added in.
