CBS Announces Star Trek: Picard Prequel Novel and Comic Series

As anticipation continues to build for Star Trek: Picard, CBS is coming up with new ways to sate viewers until the series’ debut in 2020. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the network is teaming up with IDW Publishing and Simon and Schuster’s Galley Books to release a comic book miniseries as well as a novel that tie into Patrick Stewart’s impending return as Jean-Luc Picard. Both will give readers an idea of what Picard has been up to since Star Trek: Nemesis.

IDW’s Star Trek: Picard – Countdown will play out across three issues. Mike Johnson and Picard supervising producer Kirsten Beyer are assuming writing duties for the series. It will drop its first issue in November and run through January. Following this, Galley Books will release The Last Best Hope, which picks up after Countdown’s conclusion. This novel hits stores in February and comes from writer Una McCormack, who has previously written eight Star Trek books.

These won’t be the only places where longtime Star Trek fans can get an early glimpse at Picard’s next adventure. CBS All Access subscribers can check out upcoming season of Star Trek: Short Treks for an episode that serves as a prelude to the new series. That season will premieres sometime this fall.

“From the moment we announced this series we’ve seen a groundswell of support from our fan base who are thrilled to have Jean-Luc Picard back on their screens,” said CBS Consumer Products Executive Vice President of Global Franchise Management Veronica Hart. “Having this brand new original backstory play out through both comic book and novel formats will set the stage for the new series in an exciting way while also showcasing the work of our talented partners at Simon & Schuster and IDW.”
