Olivia Munn Says Apocalypse Team Knew Little About the X-Men

While Dark Phoenix, the final installment of Fox’s X-Men films, failed to resonate with critics or audiences, the franchise’s problems didn’t start there. In a video for GQ (Via The Playlist), X-Men: Apocalypse star Olivia Munn, who played Psylocke, answered questions from fans. There she dished about how little director Bryan Singer and writer Simon Kinberg knew about the characters’ comic-book counterparts. Even by the sixth film.

When I was doing X-Men, I was actually surprised that the director and the writer didn’t even know that Psylocke had a twin brother,” said Munn. “And I had to talk to them about a lot of different things about Psylocke and some other parts of the world that they didn’t even know, and that, as a fan, was very frustrating.

Granted, Singer helped launched the X-Men films back in 2000, paving the way for today’s superhero-saturated market. And both he and Kinberg created several of the series’ high points, as well as some of its lesser entries. Regardless, the X-Men are all headed to the MCU at some point. And that continuity tends to flaunt its fondness for the comic books that inspired its characters and stories.
