Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Joins Marvel’s August Event

Earlier this week, Marvel began hyping a mysterious event happening this August with teasers listing dozens of different creative teams. Now, the event is about to reach new heights…literally. Via BleedingCool, basketball legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is joining Marvel’s planned festivities. Abdul-Jabbar will work on a story that also features the talents of co-writer Raymond Obstfeld and artist Mattia De Iulis. You can check out De Iulis’ tweet announcing the collaboration below.

This won’t be the first time that Abdul-Jabbar has dabbled in the realm of comic book writing. In 2017, he and Obstfeld also co-wrote Mycroft Holmes and the Apocalypse Handbook, a miniseries published by Titan Comics with art by Josh Cassara. Abdul-Jabbar also co-authored a series of Mycroft Holmes novels with Anna Waterhouse.

Marvel has yet to share any concrete information about what the crossover entails. However, Bleeding Cool theorizes that the project will be called Marvel Comics #1000 to celebrate Marvel’s 80th anniversary. It may also take on an anthology format similar to DC’s Action Comics #1000 and Detective Comics #1000. But Marvel has yet to confirm those details.

The other creative teams confirmed for the event include Brad Meltzer and Julian Totino Tedesco; Mark Waid and John Cassady; Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale; J. Michael Straczynski and Ed McGuinness; as well as Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Javier Rodriguez. Additionally, Alex Ross, Walt Simonson, Jeff Lemire, and Erik Larsen will be writing and illustrating their own individual stories.
