Detective Pikachu is less than a month from walking into theaters, and a special new trailer hit for Earth Day. This one is full of surprises for longtime fans of the Pokemon world. As the notes of Louis Armstrong’s “What A Wonderful World” go by, the three starters of the first generation pop up. The camera frames a couple of Charmanders chasing each another in the forest. Then a little Squirtle peeks its head out of the water, while a band of Bulbasaurs walks Justice Smith’s Tim Goodman and his injured Pikachu through the forest.
Afterwards we get a glimpse of life in Ryme City, full of thousands and thousands of majestic Pokemon. A family of Pancham makes its appearance, followed by a growling Snubbull and a singing Jigglypuff. We even got a touching hug between a reluctant Pikachu and Psyduck.
Eventually, the teaser closes with a very tender dialogue between Pikachu and Tim.
“Listen, kid, I know this much,” Pikachu says. “If your dad was here, he would hug you so hard your bones would pop.”
