There’s a new director lined up to helm Showtime’s upcoming Halo series. According to Deadline, the network has tapped Otto Bathurst to direct several episodes of the show based on the best-selling video games. Bathurst will also executive produce the series.
Bathurst made his feature directorial debut with last year’s Robin Hood film starring Taron Egerton and Jamie Foxx. Prior to this, he directed episodes of British TV shows like Peaky Blinders, Black Mirror, and Criminal Justice. Bathurst recently directed two episodes of a new TV adaptation of Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials series.

The report indicates that Halo currently has a nine-episode order. Showtime initially planned on producing a 10-episode first season. However, this changed after the creative team mapped out the show’s inaugural storyline. Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) was previously hired to serve as the show’s primary director. However, Wyatt exited the show in late 2018 because of changes in the production schedule. Kyle Killen (Awake) is the showrunner, writer, and executive producer of the series.
Details on Halo’s plot remain scarce, but leaked casting notices that circulated last fall revealed that Showtime is looking for actors to play the games’ armor-clad protagonist, Master Chief, as well as Dr. Christine Halsey. Halo: Reach introduced Halsey and established her as the creator of the SPARTAN-II program. Her inclusion on this series could indicate that the show will be a prequel to the games.
