Kong: Skull Island Nabs John Goodman

John Goodman has joined the cast of Legendary’s Kong: Skull Island

Deadline is reporting that John Goodman (“Alpha House,” The Gambler) is set to co-star in Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary’s blockbuster Kong: Skull Island, joining a cast that already includes Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, Toby Kebbell, Jason Mitchell, Corey Hawkins, John C. Reilly, Samuel L. Jackson, and Tom Wilkinson.

UPDATE: Variety is reporting that Me and Earl and the Dying Girl star Thomas Mann is also in final negotiations to join the cast of Kong: Skull Island.

A trip back to the mysterious and dangerous home of the king of the apes, Kong: Skull Island follows a team of explorers led by Hiddleston, who venture deep inside the treacherous, primordial island to find his brother and a mythical serum, confronting extraordinary creatures along the way. John Goodman, who has some prior experience wrangling dinosaurs in 1994’s The Flintstones, is taking the role of Randa, a government official who escorts the expedition to the title island.

Kong: Skull Island is being directed by The Kings of Summer‘s Jordan Vogt-Roberts from a script by John Gatins and Max Borenstein, with Legendary’s John Jashni and Thomas Tull producing alongside Mary Parent. Legendary’s story will honor the foundations of existing King Kong lore, but places it in an entirely new, distinct timeline rumored to bet set in the 1970s. Expected to go before cameras this fall, the film is set for release on March 10, 2017.

It was announced earlier this month that the Kong: Skull Island script contains connection to the monster-hunting organization Monarch from 2014’s Godzilla, setting up a battle/team-up movie between The King of the Apes and The King of the Monsters. Before Kong and Godzilla come to blows, a Godzilla sequel will be released, featuring a script by Max Borenstein and the return of Gareth Edwards as director. It has been hinted that we will see some other famous Kaiju, such as Rodan, Mothra and King Ghidorah, although none have been fully confirmed at this time. It’s set for release on June 8, 2018.
