James Gunn Says Marvel Will be Absent from Comic-Con

Fan Stephania Besco asked, “Will you be at San Diego Comic Con this year?” to which Gunn replied, “I’m not sure. Marvel isn’t going so I’m not sure I will either.”

Another fan on Twitter suggested that Gunn might be lying (regarding another topic), to which he replied:

Although disappointing to SDCC pass holders, this is perfectly reasonable as Marvel parent company Disney is holding their biennial D23 Expo in August, and as in 2013, Marvel (as well as Lucasfilm) will likely have a huge presence there.

Some other points of interest from James Gunn’s Facebook Q&A:

– When asked about his ideal actress for Captain Marvel: “I don’t know. I don’t think about casting movie characters who aren’t in my movies.”

– He would love to work with vocal Guardians of the Galaxy fan Al Pacino, but “only if we had the right role for him.” Ditto Meryl Streep.

– As opposed to England, early next year Guardians of the Galaxy 2 will film in Atlanta, where Marvel’s Ant-Man shot last summer. There will be major crew changes from the first film, most likely due to the change in venue, although he said he might have a reason to go to England in the near future.

– As expected, Karen Gillian, Michael Rooker and Sean Gunn will return for GOTG2.

– He has no interest in directing the Avengers: Infinity War movies, but he has seen Avengers: Age of Ultron already and apparently loves it.

– “I’m producing a movie I’ve written, which we just hired a director on. Look forward to news soon.”

– He’d love to do a Squirrel Girl movie.

– “I tried to direct Hit Monkey before Gotg2.”

– His dream comic book movie outside the Marvel universe would be Grant Morrison’s “We3,” the 2004 miniseries about a dog, a cat and a bunny rabbit genetically modified to be killing machines. The fan favorite, a cross between Homeward Bound and The Terminator, was at one point at New Line Cinema.

– “I have another big movie I want to do outside Marvel, but it might be a while.” He stated that he has two potential projects after GOTG2, although he hasn’t picked which one yet.

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 will once again feature Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, and Bradley Cooper as unlikely heroes who must team up in order to defeat a cosmic force of epic proportions. It will be released in theaters on May 5, 2017.
