So far, the anticipated film from the director of Inception and “The Dark Knight Trilogy” has cast Matthew McConaughey, Hathaway (retuning from The Dark Knight Rises), Jessica Chastain and Nolan regular Michael Caine, who has appeared in all of his last five films. Presumably, the first three play half of the six-man crew on a voyage to explore a wormhole into another dimension with Irwin possibly playing a fourth member of the crew and Caine’s role still under question.
Irwin’s long career as a stage performer has received him much acclaim throughout the ’80s, ’90s and into the early 2000s for his own stage shows and appearances in other plays like “Waiting for Godot” opposite Steve Martin and Robin Williams in 1988. He most famously appeared in Bobby McFerrin’s music video for “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” the same year and by then was already taking character roles in many films which continued through the ’00s with roles in Julie Taymor’s Across the Universe, M. Night Shyamalan’s Lady in the Water, Jonathan Demme’s The Manchurian Candidate and many more. His role in Rachel Getting Married was one of his more prominent appearances.
Nolan’s secrecy for the project based on an original script by his brother Jonah Nolan, merged with one of the director’s own sci-fi ideas, is on par with his last few movies. It’s once again being produced by wife Emma Thomas along with executive producer Jordan Goldberg, joined by Lynda Obst and Caltech physicist Kip Thorne as technical consultant and exec. producer.
