Box Office Report: Dark Knight Rises Surpasses The Dark Knight

Already the #1 movie of the summer and of the year, Joss Whedon’s The Avengers was reexpanded into 1,705 theaters in North America where it added another $2.4 million to its $620 million gross over the four-day extended weekend. This was enough to put it over the $1.5 billion mark worldwide where it sits comfortably behind James Cameron’s Avatar and Titanic as the third-highest grossing movie of all time.

Meanwhile, the fnale to Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy surpassed the $1 billion mark worldwide with $1.005 billion, while at the same time passing the $1.003 billion worldwide take of its predecessor, 2008’s The Dark Knight. The Dark Knight Rises joins only 12 other movies that have grossed that amount globally and ony five that have done it without the added ticket price boost that comes with a 3D release.
