X-Men actor Tye Sheridan isn’t sure if he’ll ever play the popular Marvel superhero Cyclops again.
Created by writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby, Scott Summers/Cyclops first appeared in The X-Men #1, published in 1963 by Marvel Comics. The young superhero’s mutant abilities let him emit powerful beams of energy from his eyes, a power that he controls through the use of special eyewear. In addition to being considered the first of the X-Men, he is typically depicted as the superhero team’s leader.
James Marsden originated the role in live-action, appearing as Cyclops in four movies — X-Men (2000), X2 (2003), X-Men: The Last Stand (2006), and X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014) — before Sheridan took over as younger version of the character beginning in 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse. Sheridan’s last appearance as Cyclops was in 2019’s Dark Phoenix.
In a recent interview with Screen Rant, Sheridan addressed the odds of coming back as Cyclops in a future Marvel Cinematic Universe movie, stating, “I don’t know. I don’t think there’s a question if there’s more stories to tell. I think there’s probably always more stories to tell. The question is whether audiences have a desire for those stories and whether we feel like those types of films have been oversaturated or they’re not, or if there’s a new way to make those films. But yeah, I’m not real sure.”
Is there a new X-Men movie in development?
At the time of writing, Marvel Studios is in early development on a new X-Men movie, although not much has been shared about the project. The only major update that has been given since Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige announced the movie at San Diego Comic-Con 2019 was in May 2024 when it was reported that Michael Lesslie was in negotiations to write the reboot’s screenplay.
As for mutants in the MCU in general, Marvel’s 2024 movie Deadpool & Wolverine featured the return of several characters from 20th Century Fox’s X-Men franchise, including Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman as the title superheroes, respectively. Both actors have been rumored to be in talks to return for Avengers: Secret Wars, although nothing has been officially announced yet.
