Deadpool & Wolverine’s Shawn Levy in Talks to Direct Next MCU Avengers Movie

Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy is reportedly in talks to helm the next MCU Avengers movie.

According to Deadline, Levy is having “early conversations” to direct another Marvel Studios project following 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine, which “potentially could be the next Avengers movie.”

The article notes that Levy has been given the latest version of the script for the next Avengers film, which was written by Michael Waldron; however, “sources add that he has not given an answer on whether he would come aboard, and the studio is still planning to meet with other directors while they wait on a decision from him.”

What is happening with the next MCU Avengers movie?

Following 2012’s The Avengers, 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War, and 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, the next film in the franchise was initially going to be Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Daniel Cretton was initially tapped to direct Avengers: The Kang Dynasty; however, he left the film in November 2023. Jonathan Majors was going to reprise his role as Kang the Conqueror in the film, though he was fired from the project in December 2023.

It’s not yet clear if Marvel plans to recast Majors’ role or if Kang will at all be featured in the film, which is being referred to as Avengers 5 for the time being. It is currently scheduled to be released on May 1, 2026, while an Avengers: Secret Wars film is planned for May 2027.

Along with the forthcoming Deadpool & Wolverine film (which releases in United States theaters this July), Levy is known for directing 2002’s Big Fat Liar, 2003’s Cheaper by the Dozen, 2006’s The Pink Panther, 2006’s Night at the Museum, 2009’s Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian, 2010’s Date Night, 2011’s Real Steel, 2014’s Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb, 2021’s Free Guy, and 2022’s The Adam Project. He’s also attached to helm a Star Wars movie for Lucasfilm.
