Brightburn 2: James Gunn Explains Why a Sequel Is ‘Unlikely’

Brightburn producer James Gunn does not think a sequel to the 2019 superhero horror movie will ever happen.

Responding to a fan on Threads who asked for an update on Brightburn 2, Gunn confirmed that there were talks about a sequel “early on,” presumbly right after the original opened in theaters. However, Gunn shared that “the rights are all f—ed up (I only own half), so it’s unlikely that it will ever happen.”

Gunn’s comment comes a month after he stated on Threads that there were “no plans at all” for Brightburn 2 “right now,” despite production company The H Collective announcing in September 2023 that a sequel was in early development. The movie will be one of the first projects released under The H Collective’s new company, H3 Entertainment, which aims to use the Metaverse, Web3, and AI to create a model that can produce feature films.

What is Brightburn about?

Directed by David Yarovesky, Brightburn puts a dark twist on the classic Superman origin story, focusing on an alien boy named Brandon Breyer (Jackson A. Dunn) who lands on Earth and is raised by a farm couple (Elizabeth Banks and David Denman) in the small town of Brightburn, Kansas. However, as he discovers his extraordinary powers as he grows older, Brandon’s anger issues fester into a violent path of destruction on the town and his family.

Even if Gunn does sign off on a Brightburn 2, it is unlikely that he would be involved in the production beyond an executive producer capacity due to his exclusivity deal with Warner Bros. as co-CEO of DC Studios, which lasts until 2026. In this role, he will oversee the creative side of DC Studios, as well as write and direct multiple projects set in the forthcoming DC Universe, beginning with Creature Commandos and Superman.

Brightburn is available on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray and DVD.
